Carson track experiments, focuses on relays

It was a day for the Carson High track teams to experiment and try to nail down many of its relays in a Northern 4A meet on Wednesday at Douglas High.

Among the highlights for Carson were outstanding early season times for Kayla Sanchez in the 100 meters, Julianne King in the 200, Christy Works in the 400 and an outstanding time for the Senator girls in the 4x400 relay.

Carson competed against Douglas, Damonte Ranch and Elko in the meet. The boys were able to edge out Damonte for first, 81-80. Douglas was third with 64 points and Elko finished with 47.

The Tiger girls edged Carson 85-82. Elko was third with 56 points and Damonte finished with 43. Sanchez is still dealing with an illness, so the 100 was the only event she ran. The Senator girls also dropped the baton on the 4x100 relay.

Despite her sickness, Sanchez won the 100 in an excellent early season, wind-aided time of 12.17 seconds. King was third in 13.11.

In the 400, Works had an impressive outing, going under one minute this early in the season as she won in 59.47. Gloria Sosa was second in 1:00.75 and King was fourth in 1:00.78. King also won the 200 in an impressive early season time of 26.46.

The 4x400 team of Works, Gloria Sosa, Laura Sosa and Kendra Krupp won in an excellent early season time of 4:11. The 4x800 team of the Sosas, Works and Kat vonRumpf also had an impressive outing, winning in 10:26.65. In addition, Gloria Sosa won the 800 in 2:28.62 while Laura Sosa was fourth in 2:46.94.

Others who placed for Carson were: 100 hurdles - Sara Anderson, second, 18.15; 1,600 - Jenny Mital, second, 6:04; 300 hurdles - Alex Fallon, second; 3,200 - Mital, second, 13:39; shot put - Christy Tom, third, 30 feet, 1 inch; discus - Tom, third, Brittany Dixon, fifth; triple jump - Fallon, fifth; pole vault - Stephanie Adamson, second, Allysa Sharp, third; high jump - Adamson, fourth.

For Carson's boys, Mike Arnold won the pole vault at 15-0. Carson coach Robert Maw said it looked like Arnold had cleared 15-6 twice, but nearly missed at the height.

Arnold has a season best of 15-6 and will next try to go for the school record of 15-10 on Saturday at the Northwest Invitational at McQueen. It's also planned for Sanchez to run the 100, 200 and 300 hurdles at McQueen.

Also for the boys, Carson went 1-2 in the 300 hurdles as Luke Carter won in 44.75 and James Simmons was second in 44.8. The Senators went 1-2 in the triple jump as well as Caleb Carter won at 39-9 and Evan Pearson took second. Josh Peacock was fifth.

Richard Shroy won the 3,200 in 10:38 and the Senators had impressive outings in the 4x400 and 4x800 relays. The 4x400 team of Robbie Barlow, the Carters and Floyd Hernandez took second while the 4x800 team of Barlow, McMasters, Logan Philippi and Zach Mapes was first.

"We played around," Maw said. "We're still trying to solidify our relays if we can. Our 4x8 guys did a real good job. That one made me happy. Two of my relays I'm happy with."

The 4x100 team of Hernandez, Mike McSweeney, Ean Witter and Caleb Carter took second and the 4x200 team of Barlow, Witter, David McMasters and Gabe Pongasi was third.
