A five-year-old Dayton girl was struck by an oncoming van while trying to cross a crosswalk at the intersection of Dayton Valley Road and Driftwood street at 11:29 a.m. Saturday.

The girl sustained major head injuries said Lyon County undersheriff Joe Sanford, and was taken by CareFlight to Renown Medical Center in Reno.

Her name and condition were not given out by sheriff's office or hospital officials.

"The girl and a 12-year-old friend were crossing the street northbound on Dayton

Valley Road," Sanford said. "The white van failed to stop."

Sanford said speed, not alcohol may have been a contributing factor to the accident. He said he did not have an ID on the driver of the van other than that it was a woman from out of town.

The driver was being detained by Lyon County sheriffs Saturday, pending a joint investigation by the sheriff's office and the Nevada Highway Patrol, Sanford said.

"The only injury was to the five-year-old," he said. "The 12-year-old either got out of the way or was behind her friend.

"The driver was unharmed."
