The U.S. Postal Service is reviewing four sites in Minden for a new facility.

Postal Service Real Estate Specialist Garry Mattox told the Minden Town Board in a letter the agency was open to additional suggestions.

He said community members had until May 22 to comment on the properties.

Sites under review include:

• Vacant land at 1709 Monte Vista Ave., the northeast corner of Monte Vista at Ironwood, submitted by Cora Hansen for Wild Goose Villas;

• Vacant land at 1786 Monte Vista Ave., southwest corner of Muller Parkway at Monte Vista, submitted by Kelle Sampson of Nevada Northwest LLC;

• Vacant site, 1691 County Road, northside of County Road near Olua Street, submitted by Robb Hellwinkel;

• Vacant pad site, Minden Gateway Center at the southeast corner of highways 88 and 395, submitted by Jim Nickerson of Century 21.

"Should one of these properties meet the needs of the community and the Postal Service, it may be selected for the new post office," Mattox said.

He said the Postal Service can continue to receive suggestions until the site is selected.

At 4,400 square feet, the size of the Minden Post Office needs to be doubled to meet the project needs of the community.

The U.S. Postal Service plans to build an 8,020-square-foot building on a 74,883-square-foot site.

Minden has been served by the current facility at Ninth Street and Highway 395 for 34 years. Mattox said at the February Minden Town Board meeting the Postal Service tries to build a new facility in the vicinity of the old post office.

"This new facility will provide a safe working environment for our employees and a level of service expected by our customers," Mattox said.

The Postal Service has leased the old building and deemed it too small and inadequate for expansion. Mattox expects a site to be selected by Sept. 30 and construction completed by March 2010.
