America will pay the bill for electing Obama

In an Oct. 26 column, Guy Farmer endorsed Barack Obama for President. Seemingly apropos of nothing, Farmer also mentioned that his own children are mixed-race, just like Barack.

Rush Limbaugh pointed out that Colin Powell endorsed Obama because they're both black. What makes this empty suit "transformative," as Powell prominently labeled him, except that he's black? Mr. Farmer's endorsement was for no more noble reason than that, as his column today confirms.

We know that race delivered Obama the votes of 92 percent of black Americans. White liberals like Farmer supported Obama as a sort of affirmative action statement. Both groups expect the new administration to help disadvantaged blacks do better financially, but all the racial spoils and white guilt in the world won't cancel out job killing tax increases on employers baked into the Democrats' budget plans.

More importantly, is this the way to pick the leader of the free world?

The liberal media gave Obama a pass in this election. Didn't anybody wonder, for example, if Obama really raised the better part of a billion dollars from "small donors"? In this economy?

America is going to pay dearly for this lack of scrutiny.

Theater not the place for beer

Recently when I went to buy a ticket at the Galaxy Fandango movie theater, I was outraged to see large signs at the cashiers' booths that read "Bud Light Beer is being sold here." I've never known a movie theater (except maybe an artsy or adults only cinema) to sell alcohol along with the soft drinks, candy and popcorn. And the last I heard, light beer is an alcoholic beverage. This was terribly upsetting to me. What about parents who don't want their children exposed to an atmosphere where alcohol is sold? And what about people who don't enjoy watching a movie with the smell of alcohol in the air or hearing the noise when people overdo it? What next " bouncers at the movie theater? When the lines are long at the concession stand, how thoroughly will IDs be checked? And what about the problem of drinking and driving? Who will be responsible for any problems? The City? The Galaxy Fandango? 

I wonder how many parents are aware that when they send their children to the Galaxy for a movie that they can also buy beer? 

What on earth was the City thinking when they approved a liquor license for a movie theater that caters to minors as well as adults? It seems to me if somebody wants to drink beer while being entertained, there are plenty of other places in town to do it.

Voters were misinformed

The Republicans deserved to lose, but THAT Democrat did not deserve to win. The weakness of the system is in the poorly informed, and emotionally prodded voter. This same weakness holds true in our jury system.

FDR drove me into the then " but is no more " Republican Party, but common sense directed me to never vote party. In truth, I have likely voted for more Democrats than Republicans over the years. But I judged them to be contests of values and character, not party affiliation.

One must wonder just how much the voters knew about the eventual winner who came with a very undistinguished record in the political system, both state and federal. How many knew, as one national observer pointed out, that Obama, by reason of past and current associations, could never be hired by the FBI? Think about it.

Veterans deserve to be honored

I would like to thank city leaders for ignoring Veterans Day. As the Capital of Nevada I would expect an honorable mention from the City.

As a Vietnam combat veteran I do not expect much, but the young returning veterans form Iraq and Afghanistan deserve some recognition for their service.

To all veterans " thank you for your service!
