BATTLE MOUNTAIN " Two people were killed and two others were critically injured when the van they were in overturned and burst into flames on Interstate 80 about 23 miles west of Battle Mountain, the Nevada Highway Patrol said.

NHP Sgt. Roy Baughman said the two people in the rear passenger seat of the 2000 Dodge Caravan were severely burned and died in the crash Monday.

They were not immediately identified.

The driver and passenger were identified as Vickie Lavon Tate, 44, and her husband, Rodney James Tate Sr., 48, both of Lodi, Calif.

Baughman said they suffered burns over much of their bodies and were reported in critical condition at a Salt Lake City hospital.

Investigators said Vickie Tate was driving west when the vehicle drifted into the median, struck a metal road reflector and overturned around 11:30 a.m. Monday.

The vehicle caught fire while rolling, the patrol said.
