Obituary: Verna Lou Murphy

Verna Lou Murphy, 77, a 15-year resident of Carson City, passed away April 22, 2009 in Carson City.

She was born Nov. 25, 1931 in Dewar, Okla. to Ethel and Nathaniel Bailey. As migrant workers, her family moved to Central Valley California in 1935. Verna graduated from Modesto High School in 1949 and entered the nursing program at San Joaquin General Hospital. While in school, she met the love of her life, Daniel Murphy, whom she married June 19, 1953. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Carson City, where she ministered to the community through the GriefShare Program.

Verna was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years Daniel; brothers, Thomas and Waylon and sister, Nancy.

She is survived by her son, Daniel Murphy of Lafayette, Calif.; daughter, Susan Lewis of Carson City; brother, F.J. Bailey of Atascadero, Calif.; sister Corene Silveira of Escalon, Calif.; grandchildren, Jason, Alicia, Brendan, and Elizabeth; and great-granddaughters, Margaret, Kaziah, and Bridgette.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m., Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Carson City. Arrangements entrusted to Walton's Chapel of the Valley.
