Out & About: Shakespeare to be performed in sign language

The Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival is inviting the hearing impaired community to join them for two American Sign Language performances.

ASL interpreters Ryan and Karla Johnston of South Lake Tahoe specialize in team interpreting and the dramatic arts. No person should miss out on these opportunities. I just saw "Much Ado About Nothing" and it was fantastic.

WHO: Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival

WHAT: ASL performances of "Measure for Measure" and "Much Ado About Nothing."

WHERE: Sand Harbor State Park, east shore

WHEN: "Measure For Measure," Aug. 19. and "Much Ado About Nothing" Aug. 20. Seating is in the Lower Gallery and set to the side for ease of watching both the show and the interpreters.

Backpack Attack dropoff

Each year Soroptimist International helps children receive the proper tools to get a jump start to education by collecting and distributing school supplies. In our area, more than 400 local children need assistance. Joanna Branvold at the Child Development Center at Western Nevada College also will be collecting items for children. The need is greater and every pencil counts.

WHAT: Backpack Attack provides new backpacks filled with school and hygiene supplies for children from 6-18 years old.

WHEN: All of August

THERAPEUTIC RIDING CENTER

The Kids & Horses Therapeutic Riding Center is holding an open house. It is a very successful program that offers horsemanship as a means of therapy to improve the lives of children and adults with physical and/or emotional disabilities. The facility is a North American Riding for the Handicapped Association Premier Accredited Center. Come join them at the Double W. Ranch in Minden and enjoy the facility and the dreams they provide.
