"High School Musical" is back in town.
Wild Horse Children's Theater is bringing "High School Musical 2 - On Stage," the next installment in the wildly popular Disney classic to the stage of the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada for the next three weekends.
The production follows the theater group's successful run of the original show, which introduced the cast of Troy (played in the Disney movie by teen heartthrob Zac Efron), Gabriella, the indomitable Sharpay and all their East High, Wildcat classmates.
In the second story, the fictional teenagers are off for summer break, working at the Lava Springs Country Club and learning lessons about love, friendship and work as they sing and dance.
"It started out as a TV show and it was so popular that Disney made it into a movie," said Carol Scott, the director of the Wild Horse production. "It was a huge success and the stage version stays true to the movie. All the kids are familiar with it. They come into it knowing all the words to the songs."
The production, which is one hour, 15 minutes with an intermission, features more than 50 children aged 8 to 18 years old.
"It really is children's theater by children and for children," said Scott. "The stage manager, the backstage crew, the costumes, the scenery, it's all done by kids."
The cast includes Braeden Garrett as Troy, Heather Canfield and Adriana Avitia in the role of Gabriella and Kaitlyn Barrett and Veronkia Avitia playing Sharpay Evans.
The "High School Musical" series includes two more installments, which Wild Horse Children's Theater plans to eventually bring to the Carson City stage, says Scott.
