Free workshop for language tutors today

The ESL In-Home Program of Northern Nevada is holding a tutor training workshop from 2 to 4 p.m. today at the Ron Wood Family Resource Center, 212 Winnie Lane.

The nonprofit organization pairs trained community volunteers with students for English instruction. Tutors provide one-on-one instruction in the students' homes at no cost.

The training workshop is free. Refreshments will be served.

More than 100 people in the Carson City, Gardnerville, Minden and Dayton area are looking for a tutor to teach them English. Training takes one hour.

Program director Florence Phillips said the ESL tutoring program has achieved tremendous success, including students who have earned their GEDs and 53 students who have gone on to become U.S. citizens.

In addition to Spanish, tutors work with students speaking a variety of other languages, including people from Tibet, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Indonesia, Brazil and China.
