The Salvation Army of Carson City is seeing a severe shortage in donations of Christmas toys to hand out to the hundreds of disadvantaged families who have signed up to receive holiday help.

The organization still needs more than 1,500 more toys by Monday in order to provide enough toys for every child.

"We are in dire straits," said Captain Erica Helton, Carson City Salvation Army Corps officer. "This is why I am hoping our generous community members will be able to reach into their pockets and help us help these families. We cannot do it without the public's help."

Other Salvation Army locations throughout Nevada have been fortunate enough to partner with other agencies in effort to receive more toys this year. However, the Carson City location has not been lucky enough to do so, so they must rely on generous donations from residents, Helton said.

All toys must be donated directly at their community center site on Colorado Street so The Salvation Army can ensure they go to help the children of Carson City.

The Salvation Army of Carson City hopes that the community can reach into their hearts and donate to them so they can help children in need.

New unwrapped toys can be dropped off at 661 Colorado St.

Miscellaneous food items are also needed for the holiday food boxes the Salvation Army provides. They can be dropped off at the same location. The food items needed are: Canned vegetables, canned or boxed desserts, stuffing mix and canned soups.

Donations of cash and checks are also much-needed and will stay within the Carson City region, Helton said. To donate to The Salvation Army of Carson City, cash and check donations can be mailed to:

The Salvation Army of Carson City, P.O. Box 956, Carson City, NV 89701. Donations also can be made online at www.carsoncitysalarmy.org.
