Musicians invited to join the symphony

The Carson City Symphony, conducted by David Bugli, will begin rehearsals for a February concert at 7:15 p.m. Jan. 6 in the Carson High School band room, 1111 N. Saliman Road in Carson City.

Current openings are for horn and strings.

Carson City Symphony is a volunteer, community organization, and auditions are not required but registration is necessary. For information, call 883-4154.

The concert will be Feb. 28, in the Bob Boldrick Theater at the Carson City Community Center.

New exhibit features original oil paintings

Original oil paintings by Howard Friedman of Reno will be featured in January in the Backseat Gallery inside Comma Coffee.

An artists reception will be at 5-7 p.m. Wednesday Jan. 5 in the gallery at 312 S. Carson St. Appetizers will be served with beer and wine will be available for purchase.

Friedman will be showing paintings of the area as well as of other places where he has traveled. He paints with a pallete knife applying many layers stressing his love of color. His Web site is at paintingsbyhoward.com.

Swing dance lessons start in January

High Sierra Swing Dance Club, as a co-production with Brewery Arts Center, presents a six-week series of dance lessons, Wednesdays starting Jan. 6 at the BAC Grand Ballroom, 449 W. King St., Carson City.

Classes for West Coast swing beginners and those with less than six months' dance experience, are from 6-7:30 p.m.; WCS Beyond Basics is 7:30-9 p.m.

No partner is necessary. Cost is $51.50 for one class, with a $5 discount on a second class and for BAC members. Signups accepted at the second session.

Filmmaking and 3D animation classes

The Brewery Arts Center will offer a full suite of filmmaking workshops and courses as part of the "Northern Nevada Film Factory," a filmmakers and animators club.

ACCTV - Filmmakers & Animation Club helps aspiring filmmakers and animators learn their craft and produce quality productions. Classes include:

• Set Design Workshop - 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Jan. 9.

• Hair and Makeup for Film - noon- 4 p.m. Feb. 20.

• The Science of ScreenWriting Workshop - noon - 5 p.m. March 20.

• Beginning 3D Computer Modeling and Animations Course for youth and adults - 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 12 - March 16.
