The work has already begun for the Nugget's free Christmas dinner, said Food & Beverage Director Alex Canas on Wednesday.

The Nugget will serve 475 pounds of turkey, 300 pounds of green beans, 17 cases of yams and all the trimmings to an estimated 500 people free of charge for Christmas.

Diners can expect a menu of slow roasted turkey, giblet gravy, candied yams, vegetables, cranberry relish, sausage and apple stuffing and mashed potatoes. For dessert, pumpkin pie.

The free meal will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Garden Cafe. After 2 p.m. there is an $8.88 charge.

The Nugget has served free holiday meals on Thanksgiving and Christmas since the Adams family bought the casino about 61 years ago. This year, they gave away more than 1,000 Thanksgiving meals.

Canas said celebrants can also purchase the Christmas feast at the snack bar.

Or for something different, a holiday meal featuring salmon, bourbon-braised turkey or pasta can be bought at the Nugget Steakhouse.

And just as in years past, Canas said, the Nugget will be providing 25 meals for the staff and juveniles at the Murphy-Bernardini Regional Juvenile Justice Center.

"This is one of the biggest things the Carson City Nugget does every year, too. We make dinner for those kids that cannot be with their family for the holidays," said Canas.
