The Carson City Senior Citizens Center has gone green " now offering salads with toppings in addition to the hot meals they serve for lunch.

Diners can choose a dinner salad plain or topped with turkey, ham or tuna, plus the regular side dishes that are offered with the hot meal.

"I'm very happy that we have a choice," said Ellie Greer of Carson City. "I think the salad's going to be a success."

Norma Tveit is also pleased with being given a choice, but she's not rushing to change her dining habits.

"I'll wait and see (how it goes)," Tveit said. "I would like to have tomatoes on my salad."

Janice McIntosh, director, said four people ordered the salad Tuesday, the first day it was offered. By Wednesday, word had spread and 13 or 14 had signed up.

"As far as I'm concerned it was all right," said Roger Germain, who chose tuna as his salad topper. "I think this was a good idea for two reasons. One, if you don't like the main item you have a choice, and two, it's a healthy alternative. You can go either way with it."

Those who want the salad are asked to call the center after 5 p.m. the day before and leave their name and topping request.
