AL roundup: Orioles' Scott puts up 7 RBIs to beat Mariners

SEATTLE (AP) - Luke Scott had three hits and a career-high seven RBIs to power Baltimore to a 12-4 victory over Seattle on Tuesday night.

Scott had a two-run single in the first, a two-run triple in a four-run sixth and a three-run homer in a six-run seventh. His previous high for RBIs was five.

Nolan Reimold had two hits and three RBIs for the Orioles.

With Baltimore trailing 3-2 entering the sixth, Nick Markakis singled off Chris Jakubauskas (5-6). After an out and an intentional walk, Reimold tied it with an RBI single to right. Scott followed with a low liner to center that went to the wall. He scored on Melvin Mora's single that made it 6-3.

The Orioles added six runs in the seventh, three came on Scott's 17th homer.

Mark Hendrickson (4-4) pitched 2 2-3 scoreless innings for the win.

Seattle starter Erik Bedard, who had missed the last 25 games with left shoulder inflammation, worked the first four innings. He allowed two runs, two hits, walked one and struck out eight. He was on a 75-pitch count.

Rangers 8, Angels 5

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Andruw Jones hit a three-run homer off John Lackey in Texas' six-run fifth inning and the Rangers moved back into a tie with the Angels for first place in the AL West.

Hank Blalock scored on a wild pitch and Jarrod Saltalamacchia added a two-run single in the inning, when Texas erased the Angels' 3-0 lead. All the runs came with two outs.

Juan Rivera hit two solo homers and Chone Figgins drove in two runs for Los Angeles, which beat Texas 9-4 on Monday night in the opener of the series.

Vladimir Guerrero of the Angels left in the eighth inning with a strained muscle behind his left knee. He recently returned to right field after serving as the designated hitter while recovering from a torn pectoral muscle.

Derek Holland (3-5), the second of six Texas pitchers, allowed an unearned run in two innings to get the win.

Lackey (3-4) gave up six runs and nine hits in 4 2-3 innings, walking two and striking out six.

Rays 3, Blue Jays 1, 11 innings

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Pat Burrell hit a two-run homer in the 11th inning to give Tampa Bay the victory.

The AL champions stopped a four-game losing streak that included three losses to rookie pitchers. They hardly pulled out of an offensive funk - managing two hits in six innings against Marc Rzepczynski in the 23-year-old lefty's major league debut.

The Rays finished with four hits, two after the fourth inning, when Rzepczynski walked three, including Gabe Kapler with the bases loaded, to fall behind 1-0.

Scott Rolen tied it in the eighth with a run-scoring single that extended his career-best hitting streak to 24 games.

Burrell, mired in a 4-for-34 slump, hit his fourth homer of the season connecting off Brandon League (1-4). Dan Wheeler (3-1) pitched two scoreless innings to get the win for the Rays, who were outscored 25-7 during their four-game skid.

Red Sox 5, Athletics 2

BOSTON (AP) - Josh Beckett became Boston's second 10-game winner and fellow All-Star Jason Bay hit his 20th homer.

Beckett (10-3) matched the win total of another Boston all-star, Tim Wakefield, and remained unbeaten at home this season with five wins in eight starts.

Bay, the top vote-getter among AL outfielders for next Tuesday's game, hit a solo shot in the second inning, his first homer in 49 at-bats since hitting one June 23 at Washington.

Jonathan Papelbon, who also made the All-Star team, struck out the side in the ninth for his 21st save in 23 opportunities.

The Red Sox got nine hits off Dana Eveland (1-3) and four relievers one night after managing just two hits off rookie Brett Anderson in his 6-0 complete-game victory. That was the third loss in four games for the team with the AL's best record (50-33).

Scott Hairston broke Beckett's streak of 23 innings at Fenway Park without an earned run when he homered with the bases empty in the first inning.

Beckett gave up six hits and a walk while striking out four.

Tigers 8, Royals 5

DETROIT (AP) - Marcus Thames hit a three-run homer to back Justin Verlander, who struck out 11 to run his AL-best total to 141, the most by a Detroit pitcher before the All-Star game in 37 years.

Verlander (9-4) gave up five runs and seven hits over six innings.

Miguel Cabrera and Placido Polanco also homered for the AL Central-leading Tigers.

Three relievers combined for two innings to set up Fernando Rodney's 18th save in as many chances.

David DeJesus hit a three-run double in the second inning for Kansas City and Billy Butler added a solo homer in the sixth. Bruce Chen (0-3) allowed seven runs and five walks in 4 2-3 innings.

Yankees 10, Twins 2

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - CC Sabathia allowed one run and three hits in seven innings and New York roughed up Minnesota starter Scott Baker.

The bottom third of the Yankees order had seven hits and six RBIs.

Baker (6-7) was 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA in his only two previous starts against the Yankees. He gave up five runs and nine hits with two walks and four strikeouts in three innings, his shortest outing of the season.

Mark Teixeira had four hits and Brett Gardner added three and two RBIs for the Yankees, who have beaten the Twins 16 times in their last 22 meetings.

Sabathia (8-5) held All-Stars Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau hitless in six combined at-bats. He allowed a solo homer to Michael Cuddyer in the second inning.

White Sox 10, Indians 6

CHICAGO (AP) - Paul Konerko hit a career-high three home runs, including a go-ahead grand slam in the sixth inning, for Chicago.

Konerko, who drove in a career-high seven runs, became the 12th player in White Sox history to hit three homers in a game. Jose Valentin was the last White Sox to hit three home runs in a game on July 30, 2003.

After being selected to his fourth All-Star game on Sunday, White Sox starter Mark Buehrle (9-2) allowed three runs and scattered seven hits in seven innings. He struck out three and allowed just one walk.

Alexei Ramirez added a two-run home run in the seventh for the White Sox, who have won 15 of their last 21 games.

Jeremy Sowers (2-7) allowed four runs and five hits in 5 1-3 innings. He struck out four and walked two.

Grady Sizemore homered twice and Shin-Soo Choo added a solo shot for Cleveland.
