Grass Valley man dies on Interstate 80

A Grass Valley, Calif., man was killed Saturday on Interstate 80 after he failed to see that traffic ahead of him had stopped for a non-injury accident.

According to Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Chuck Allen, Derek Manoguerra, 31, of Grass Valley was eastbound in a 2000 Mazda van approaching the backed up traffic about 10:30 a.m.

"For reasons unknown, the driver failed to observe the stopped traffic ... Although he applied the brakes and steered to the right in an attempt to avoid a collision, the left front portion of his van struck the right rear portion of (a tractor trailer),-said Allen in a press release. "

The van rolled over coming to rest on its left side on the eastbound exit ramp to West McCarran Boulevard.

Manoguerra was pronounced dead at the scene.

Driver of the big rig, Elliot Mergler, 47 of Marysville, Calif., escaped injury.
