The Public Utilities Commission has been awarded an $816,274 grant for employee training and two added staff members to handle the workload generated by such issues as renewable energy and smart grid technology.

Executive Director Crystal Jackson said the two added positions will focus completely on renewable energy and energy efficiency.

The rest of the funding will pay for specific training in those types of areas for existing personnel, she said.

PUC is charged with providing recommendations on renewable energy, energy efficiency and proposed transmission lines. It will handle oversight of utility renewables programs, verify Portfolio Energy Credits, inspect energy generators for compliance and provide educational outreach.
