Fernley soldier's funeral Tuesday

Funeral services for a Fernley soldier killed in Iraq are set for Tuesday.

Spc. Thomas Lyons, 20, died Sept. 8 in northern Iraq when the truck he was riding in hit an explosively formed projectile. Also killed were Staff Sgt. Shannon M. Smith, 31, of Marion, Ohio; and Pfc. Zachary Myers, 21.

A public viewing for Lyons will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 155 Highway 95 Alternate in Fernley. Services will at noon. Military honors will follow at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 14 Veterans Way, Fernley, according to Lyons' mother Jeanna Flint. 

Lyons spent his elementary-school years in Carson City, and attended Fernley high school where he was on the football and wrestling teams. He enlisted in the Army in 2007 and was stationed in Fort Richardson, Alaska.

He was married six months ago and his wife gave birth to the couple's first child in May.

He arrived in Iraq July 12.

Gov. Jim Gibbons is scheduled to attend, his spokesman Daniel Burns said.

Gibbons on Friday ordered that flags at the state Capitol Complex on Tuesday will be flown at half-staff in honor of Lyons.
