ELKO - An Elko woman whose 7-month-old daughter starved to death in 2005 has taken the stand in her retrial.

Salvana Fernandez was convicted in June 2006 of child abuse or neglect causing substantial bodily harm in the death of her 7-month-old daughter, Monica Uribe. But the Nevada Supreme Court in December granted her a new trial because it said jurors were given improper instructions.

On Friday in court Salvana Fernandez broke down in tears several times throughout her testimony, saying she didn't know her baby was suffering.

The little girl was taken to Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital on Feb. 6, 2005, where she was pronounced dead. An autopsy showed she weighed a little over 8 pounds.

Closing arguments are set for Tuesday.
