Community sports briefly: McFarren one of 10 top student athletes

Carson High's Katie McFarren was named one of the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association - Farmers Insurance - Lifetouch Photography top 10

student -athletes of the year in Northern Nevada.

They will each receive a $1,500 scholarship from Farmers Insurance and Lifetouch Photography.

Also honored were Incline High's Michael Ceragioli, Fernley's Bryce Baker, Bishop Manogue's Steven Carlson, Eureka's Delayni DeWitt, Lowry's Skylar Estes, Elko's Morgan Hines, Reed's Aaron Greenblat South Tahoe's Kelsey Smith and Whittell's Samuel Harris.

A banquet to recognize the student-athletes will take place at 6 p.m. May 25 at the Silver Legacy Casino-Resort in downtown Reno.

SYFL signups Saturday

Sierra Youth Football League will hold sign-ups for football and cheerleading from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday and May 8 and 15 at Carson City Pizza Factory, 3120 Highway 50 East.

According to organizers, SYFL is the fastest-growing youth football league in Northern Nevada, with more than 2,000 players. Children ages 6 to 14 (not in high school) play with age peers under Nevada high school football rules on 100-yard fields. Practice start July 26 with the first game on Aug. 14.

With the help of Carson High Football Coach Blair Roman, Carson SYFL is developing a program that will help youth football players transition into high school football. Carson High's offense, defense and terminology will be utilized.

Registration is $180. Players get to keep a game jersey, practice jersey, integrated girdle, socks and they will receive a photomate picture and participation trophy. Financial aid and payment plans are available.

Eagle Valley women's club results

Results from Wednesday's Eagle Valley Women's Club are:

First flight: Kim Boykin and Robin Ponte (79) tied for first with the low gross. Joyce Guy had the low net with a 72. Angie Scrivner, Carrie Harn and Gloria Thomas tied for second with a 74. Sherry Ramage (77) was third. Second flight: Dee Dee Murray won the low gross with a 92. Nancy Martinelli was the low net with a 79. Carol McIntyre and Annette Ramirez (70) tied for second. Third was Kathy Kennady with a 71. Third flight: Eva Sulprizio and Sue Farcello tied for low gross with a 103. Mary Phillips won low net with a 66. Pat Menath was second (77). Third was Jackie Allard (78).

Kim Boykin was closest to the pin on the fourth hole at 6'1". Annette Ramirez was closest on the 17th hole (11'2").

Twisted Stix still leads division

Do Work took over first place with one week before playoffs in the Comstock Division of the Carson City chapter of the American Poolplayers Association.

Scratch Masters was behind in second (1040). Dean's Machine was third at 1026.

Daniel McRae of Cornbread & Whiskey is first in the 4-5 tier with 40 points. Kirsten Kehe of Twisted Stix was second with 39 points. John Vecchiarelli of 9-Spoke is third at 33. Bill Howard of Cornbread & Whiskey leads the 6-9 tier with 27 points, one better than Don Allred of Scratch Masters.

Gloria Rodriguez leads the 1-3 tier with 30 points, while James Panos of Scratch Masters is second with 25. Lawrence Gloisten of

9-Spoke is third with 24.

Role Models holds a

58-57 lead over Twisted Attitudes in the Mosconi Division standings. Jerry's Kids is third with 56 points.

Casey Richards of Support Rackless Habits leads the 4-5 tier with

45 points, 12 better than Austin Matthews of Jerry's Kids.

Juan Pina of Twisted Attitudes is in the lead in the 6-7 tier with 48 points.

Don Allred and Alex Gutierrez of Role Models are tied for second with

45 points.

Jason Brendel of Twisted Attitudes leads the 2-3 tier with 34 points, while Mark Gilchrist of Big Dogs is second with 25. William Bollman of Trouble Makers and Seth Kemper of Rack Fink are third with

24 points.

Pop Warner fundraiser May 7

Carson City Pop Warner is hosting its second annual poker night at the Carson Plaza Conference Center, 211 East 9th St., from 6-10 p.m. May 7.

Cost is $20 for tickets, which includes appetizers. Poker buy-in is $40 with options for re-buys. There will be a cash prices for first and second place.

Participants must be 21 and older.
