'Creative explosion' at galleries

Western Nevada College art, graphic communications and photography students are celebrating their talents and creativity in a big way. In fact, Art Professor Sharon Tetly said, a "creative explosion" is taking place in the college's three art galleries as nearly 500 works are on display in the annual student art exhibition through Friday, May 14. A public reception is 4:30-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 28.

It took Tetly, art instructor Jill Brugler and a group of students 20 hours to hang the diverse and colorful exhibit, which spans all three galleries in the Bristlecone Building and includes work from students at the Carson City and Douglas campuses. It is by far the largest art exhibition the college has ever shown, Tetly said.

The WNC Carson art galleries, located in the Bristlecone Building on the Carson City campus, are open weekdays, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All exhibitions and related activities are free.

Play golf to help WNC

The Nevada Associated Students of Construction group at WNC is seeking players and teams for a golf tournament Friday, April 30, at Empire Ranch Golf Course. Cost is $85 for individuals or $250 for a four-person team that will include one student from the construction program.

The aim is to help raise funds for the program, and mentor students who will soon be headed into the workforce. Lunch and gifts will be included.

Hole sponsorships also are available for $500, and include sponsor signs and recognition in the tournament program. To register call 445-3240.

WNC honors regent Gallagher

Western Nevada College students paid tribute to long-serving Nevada System of Higher Education Regent Dorothy Gallagher at their annual awards and recognition banquet in Carson City. Gallagher has been a champion for Nevada higher education for more than three decades, and plans to retire after this year. The Elko resident supports enhancements in programs and facilities that have helped WNC to grow and serve changing community needs.

Community Enhances College

Continuing donations by community members make a difference at WNC. Two recent gifts include: 15 computers donated to the Information/Electronics Technology program by the Nevada Department of Transportation, and an evergreen tree donated to the campus by Arnie Hass of Carson City.
