PREPS: Carson wrestlers 4th in own tourney

Carson High's wrestling team finished fourth at the season-opening Capital City Dual Meet Tournament Saturday at Carson Middle School.

Because El Dorado dropped out on Friday, tournament officials had to change the format a bit. Instead of four duals each team wrestled three, and then individual wrestlers were matched up to fill out the day.

Carson beat Wooster 48-34 and Bishop Manogue 48-25 before losing to defending 3A state champ Lowry 47-28. Lowry finished first, Spanish Springs second. North Valleys and Carson had identiacl 2-1 records, but the Panthers tallied more points and were awarded third place.

"We had mixed results," Carson coach Tm McCarthy said. "We saw a ton of stuff we need to work on. I see a ton of potential in this group.

"Everybody left happy today. Everybody got four or five matches in."

At 112 pounds, Pat Craugh went undefeated at 5-0 with two pins. Nick Lani (119), Cole McCarthy (125), Ty Welch (130), Austin Brown (135) and Nicolas Garcia (160) all compiled 4-1 records. Brown recorded four pins, while Lani had three.

"Austin had a great day," McCarthy said. "He was real crisp and had a lot of energy. Nick (Lani) was one of our bright spots."

Jordan Luhrs (145) went 3-2 with two pins, while Kyle Sharp (103) also went 3-2. Cruz Kerver (140) and Aaron Lopez (171) each went 2-3. Cody Tucker (189) went 1-3 as did Cody Cunningham (152).

"It was nice to see Aaron and Cody (Tucker) get their first varsity wins," McCarthy said.

Carson failed to field a 215-pounder and went a combined 3-7 in the 171, 189 and heavyweight matches. That will be a problem all season for the Senators.

Carson hosts Spanish Springs and Fallon on Wednesday starting at 5 p.m.

JV WRESTLING

Carson wins three titles

RENO - Sammy Mercado (112), Adan Ortega (119) and Sean Robles (125) all took home titles at the Hug JV Invitational Saturday afternoon. All three compiled 5-0 records.

Dominic Kinder (112) was second at 4-1 as was Riley Hutchings (119) . Jesus Santos was third at 171.

Dayton wins

Sutro title

DAYTON - Dayton used a suffocating 2-2-1 defense to beat Silver Stage 59-29 in the semifinals and Smith Valley 51-44 Saturday in the finals en route to defending its Sutro Classic title.

In other games, Smith Valley beat Fernley 70-34, Bishop topped ROP in overtime 78-77 and Truckee topped Fernley 62-43.

Dayton, 4-0, hosts ROP Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

"We played pretty solid," Dayton coach Jason Santos said. "We did a good job on Jordan Fletcher (Smith Valley). We held him to 16 points which is low for him. We turned them over quite a few times."

Dylan Taylor led the Dust Devils with 13 points, while Tim Ply and Tyler Firestone added eight apiece and point guard Kage Walker contributed seven.

In the easy win over Silver Stage, Dayton led 27-8 at the half, as Marcos Macias scored 15 of his 17 in the first half. Ply finished with 17 and Taylor added nine.

"They (Silver Stage) had no idea what to do (against the press)," Santos said. "We blew it open the first half."

DAYTON SPLITS

FERNLEY - The Dayton girls basketball team bounced back from a loss to Lone Pine earlier in the day to defeat Silver Stage, 42-28, during the Vaquero Invitational on Saturday.

Dayton switched to a zone defense and never allowed Silver Stage to get off an uncontested shot en route to grabbing a 12-2 lead after the first quarter.

The Dust Devils would add to their lead after every quarter the rest of the way.

Leading Dayton was Taylor Hill with 11 points. Erin Edison chipped in eight points. Amber Brooks and Andrea Ramirez each added five.

In the earlier contest, Dayton came out slow and got themselves in a first half hole they could never recover from in a 38-34 loss to Lone Pine. Trailing 20-15 at half, the Dust Devils did fight back to tie the game at the end of the third quarter. However, they could never take the lead in the fourth quarter, before Lone Pine put it out of reach.

Leading the Dust Devils were Hill with eight points, Brooks with seven points and Ramirez with five.

Dayton, 2-1 on the season, travels to Whittell for a 5:30 p.m. game on Tuesday.

JV GIRLS BASKETBALL

Dayton girls win twice

LOVELOCK - Dayton won one blowout and one close game en route to its second and third wins at the Lovelock Tournament.

Dayton topped Silver Stage 35-1 and Lowry 22-18. Taylor Ingersoll led the way in both games with eight points apiece. Katrina Breithaup and Cora Jeffreys had six each against Silver Stage.

Kelly Combs had six against Lowry and Jeffreys hit a key bucket down the stretch for the Dust Devils.

FRESHMAN BASKETBALL

Carson boys win title

RENO - Carson beat Virginia City in the semifinals 42-33 and Wooster, 59-32, in the championships of the Wooster Tournament.

Garrett Schafer led the way with 13 and Alan Cohen added nine.
