A subcommittee of the Public Employee Benefits Program board Monday narrowed the list of candidates seeking the executive officer's post from 14 to six.

One applicant withdrew her name but seven of the others were removed from consideration either because they didn't provide the requested information or show they had the necessary experience for the position.

The job was vacated in January when Leslie Johnstone accepted the position of director for the Health Services Coalition in Las Vegas.

The subcommittee plans to ask the full board Thursday how many finalists they want the field narrowed to. Then the subcommittee will meet again March 26 to conduct telephone interviews with the six to settle on recommendations to present to the full board.

Three of those on the list are from Nevada. They include PEBP's current Chief Financial Officer Jon Hager, former PEBP Chief Financial Officer and current deputy superintendent of education Jim Wells and Debbra King, former financial deputy for the Department of Health and Human Services.

In addition, Reginald Crowell, risk management officer for the Oakland Unified School District, David McLachlan, Blue Cross Blue Shield pharmacy operations manager in Washington, D.C., and John Zimmerman, who runs a county employee benefits department in Colorado, made the initial cut.

The job pays a maximum of $123,783 annually.
