William Street to be closed for utility work

A significant road closure will affect traffic all of Sunday and part of Monday, said Patrick Pittenger, Carson City's transportation director.

William Street will be closed at Roop Street for sewer utility work as part of the ongoing Roop Street widening project.

The closure will start at 2:30 a.m. Sunday, and the road will not re-open until 5:30 a.m. Monday. Detours will be marked, he said.

Information on poached deer sought

Nevada game wardens are seeking any tips or information on three poached deer that were found Feb. 25 west of Carson City.

Two does were found killed with much of the meat taken, and one buck was also discovered fatally wounded nearby. The first doe discovered was pregnant with twins, and two near-term embryos were found discarded near the gut pile of the animals. All the animals were found close to each other in Voltaire Canyon.

Game wardens are looking for any information on the poaching cases. Investigators say that evidence suggests these three animals were all shot by the same group of poachers.

Operation Game Thief is offering a reward of $1,000 for information that leads to the conviction of those responsible for this crime. Anyone with information can contact OGT at 800-992-3030, and callers will remain anonymous.

Free ESL tutor training offered

Now's the time to make a difference and be part of the solution through free English as a Second Language training.

The workshop will be from 2-4 p.m. Saturday at the Ron Wood Family Resource Center, 212 E. Winnie Lane.

Commitment for tutors is only one or two hours per week. Learn how to teach a person in the community who is eager to speak read and write English.

There are currently 83 tutors teaching basic English to 143 students on a one-to-one basis at no charge. More than 75 people in Washoe County, Dayton and Carson City are looking for a tutor to teach them English.

Instructional materials are provided at no charge. No experience or foreign language is necessary.

Peace corner at Kid's Talking Wall

Children will ring "Peace Bells" at the unveiling of the Children's Peace Corner at the Kids' Talking Wall at the Carson Mall from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Organizers encourage the community to stop by and ring a bell for peace, to help remind everyone that peace is a shared wish for people everywhere.

Spring Tea Fashion Show to be fundraiser

The Women's Society of St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Community is sponsoring a Spring Tea and Fashion Show from 11:30 a.m. to

3 p.m. April 17 at the Governor's Mansion on Mountain Street.

High tea will be served and food will be catered by Cafe Girasole. Fashions will include contemporary, casual and business attire.

The event will benefit the Homeless Connection, Senior Rx program and helping with low-income families' utility bills.

The event is open to the public, but seating is limited to 160. Tickets are $25 per person. Raffle tickets will be sold for $1 or six for $5.

Golf tourney to raise funds for Safe Grad

Thunder Canyon Rach Golf Resort will host the second annual Carson High School Safe Grad Golf Tournament for the class of 2010 with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. April 18.

Participants can check in at noon. Prizes will be awarded for first through fourth place teams. There also will be raffle prizes and an awards banquet.

Green fees of $85 includes cart and lunch.

The Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare Auxiliary is sponsoring a rummage sale.

This fundraiser will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

1 p.m. April 10. The location is at the Eagles Lodge, 1380 E. 5th St. Donations are welcome for the sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Dangberg Home tours start in April

Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park will open for tours April 7.

The park, located just west of Minden in Douglas County on Highway 88, features several historic buildings constructed between 1857 and 1916. Of particular interest is the 15-room main residence, once one of the most prominent homes in Carson Valley.

Park tours include a presentation on Dangberg family history and the family's role in the development of Carson Valley. Displays of historic objects including furniture, clothing, books, dishes, artwork, photographs, phonographs and other items give insight into the lives of four generations of Nevadans.

Pony Express living history festival set

The Nevada State Parks and the National Pony Express Association are celebrating the 150th anniversary commemorating the first Pony Express ride from St. Joseph, Mo., in 1860.

The event will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 3 at Buckland Station, just nine miles south of Silver Springs on Highway 95A.

The festival includes wagon rides to the fort at Fort Churchill State Park, mailbag exchanges and children's games. The Eagle Valley Muzzleloaders, Civil War volunteers, an Abraham Lincoln Chautauquan, Wally Erhard and other historians from various historical societies will be in attendance, along with mountain man Bob Burke.

Entry fee is $4 per vehicle for park entrance with an additional $1 museum admission fee for Buckland Station.
