PREP ROUNDUP: Carson girls edge Galena, 2-1

Carson High's girls soccer team continued its winning ways Saturday with a 2-1 win over visiting Galena.

Carson improved to 8-0-1, while Galena and Douglas are both 5-3. The second half of the season starts Tuesday when Carson visits Damonte Ranch at 5:30 p.m.

Carson scored both of its goals in the first half. Kenzie Tillitt scored in the seventh minute, while Kaitlyn Holmes scored 14 minutes later.

Brenda Torres got the assist on Carson's first goal and Holmes' goal was on a rebound after a Carson shot went off the post to Holmes who beat the Galena keeper.

Galena's goal came in the 77th minute.

DAYTON BLANKS YERINGTON

The Dayton girls soccer team defeated Yerington 8-0.

Maribel Ledezma scored twice in the first 14 minutes thanks to assists by Lexis Hernandez and Perla Landa.

An own goal made it 3-0, and a minute later, Serena Pistilli scored unassisted. Less than 10 minutes later Amanda Brooks fed Erica McCoy for the Dust Devils' fifth goal of the first half.

In the 45th minute, Susie Melgarejo scored an unassisted goal. In the 55th minute, Isabel Villafana scored assisted by Devon Cates. In the final 30 seconds of the game Savannah Parsons scored unassisted.

CARSON JVs WIN

The Senators improved to 8-0-1 and took over first place with their 2-0 win over previously undefeated Galena.

Robert Abundis scored twice, the first coming in the 47th minute and the second coming in the 60th minute. Francisco Barrios and Miguel Ortiz were credited with the assists.

Gustavo Villagrana was credited with his sixth shutout of the season. He only had to face one shot on goal and six overall thanks to the defensive work of Nate King, Arnaldo Diaz, Danny Alonso, Adam Shoaf and Omar Garcia.

VOLLEYBALL

REED SWEEPS DAYTON

SPARKS - After narrowly escaping defeat in the first game, Reed easily handled Dayton in the second and third games to record a non-league sweep - 26-24, 25-11 and 25-13.

Dayton fell to 23-6 overall. The Dust Devils visit Lovelock on Wednesday before returning home for Friday's homecoming match against Silver Stage.

"I think the girls got tired from all the games they have been playing," Dayton coach Monica Halverson said. "We weren't serving strategically or competitively."

Madison Foley finished with four kills, three blocks and three digs. Cassie DePew finished with two kills and four blocks. Jamie Darragh had three blocks, five digs and four kills. McKenzie Kielty doled out 18 assists. Kathie Arias had two blocks, a kill and two digs.

In JV action, Dayton lost to Reed 17-25, 25-20 and 15-10. Chyanne Corley had two kills and a block, while Heather Niemi had six assists, two aces and a kill. Ashley Vickes added two digs and two kills. On Friday, Yerington defeated Dayton 25-19 and 25-19. Corley had two kills and four blocks while Alyse Fletcher added five assists.

The Dayton freshmen lost 25-12 and 15-12 to Reed.

CROSS COUNTRY

CARSON TEAMS TRIUMPH

RENO - The Carson High boys and girls cross country teams won the Nevada Chase Saturday at Rancho San Rafael Park.

The format of the race is that runners are grouped by previous times and go off in 30-second intervals, according to Carson coach Pete Sinnott.

The Carson girls finished with 25 points, Reno was second with 42 and Spanish Springs was third with 65. The Carson boys had 42 points, followed by Spanish Springs 64 and Reno 71.

April Shonnard was second with a 21:20 over the 3.1-mile course. Freshman Alex Drozdoff was third at 21:26 and Cindy Juchtzer was sixth at 22:23. Amanda Gordon took eighth at 22:54, Erika Sosa was 12th in 23:56 and Ashley Salcedo was 16th in 24:20. Mallory Wilson, who was just pulled up to the varsity was 19th in 24:37.

On the boys side, Joshua Van Sickle finished first with the 30-second headstart and eighth overall at 19:16. Logan Philippi was third at 18:47, Nick Greene was sixth at 19:03, Evan Richard was 12th at 19:31 and Taylor Bradshaw was 13th at 19:41. Brent Moyle was 15th at 20:01 and Dominic Kinder was 16th at 20:28.

Carson visits North Valleys for a dual meet on Wednesday and then travels to the Clovis Invitational on Saturday. The Clovis meet is one of the best on the West Coast.
