Nearly 90 people participated in the Nevada Appeal's Literacy for Life golf tournament Friday at the Thunder Canyon Golf Course.

The proceeds from the tournament will benefit literacy outreach in Northern Nevada. It's the second year the Nevada Appeal has sponsored the event.

As he was driving golf balls before teeing off Friday morning, Stevan Lyon, a financial adviser with Waddell and Reed in Carson City, said the tournament had an impressive turnout.

"It's for a great cause," Lyon said. "Certainly something we need to improve on in this area is literacy for kids and adults."

Carson City Library Director Sara Jones said the event will help bring the issue of illiteracy to the public's attention.

"One of the best things is raising awareness," Jones said. "For most of us, we live our life every day fully functioning and literate and reading newspapers and books, and don't realize for many people that's something they can't do."

Bob Fredlund, a Carson City Realtor with Coldwell Banker Best Sellers, said the program will help spread library cards throughout the community.

"I support the Literacy for Life and what you guys have done all year," Fredlund said. "I support the Nevada Appeal and what they've done. They've done a great job for the library and getting people out here."
