Carson City is in the process of updating its flood protection ordinance. To be in good standing with the state's floodplain guidelines and the National Floodplain Insurance Program, each community must adopt a minimum floodplain management ordinance.

As NFIP regulations change, so must each community's ordinance change to be in compliance with the federal rules.

The updated ordinance also contains a few higher standards for greater protection of Carson City citizens, which allows for a 20 percent discount on flood insurance rates for properties located in a floodplain:

• Page 6 - No. 41 Floodway definition was modified to reduce the cumulative increase of the water surface elevation by 0.01 of a foot.

• Page 19, 20 - c. Elevation Requirements for Lowest Floor is shown at 2 feet above the base flood elevation.

• Page 25 - No. 9 Protection of Floodplain Storage Capacity was added to the ordinance.

To view and/or comment on the draft ordinance, a hard copy is on hand at each of three locations: the library, City Hall and the permit center in the BRIC.

An electronic copy can be downloaded from http://www/carson-city.nv.us./Modules/ShowDocument.aspx?documentid=27489 or by e-mailing stormwaterhotline@carson.org or by calling 887-2305.

The state model ordinance is attached to the back of the city's draft ordinance. In the draft ordinance, deletions are shown as strike through, additions are underlined and their text is red.

Return any comments to the city's Public Works Department before June 1 by e-mail to stormwaterhotline

@carson.org or by mail to Floodplain Administrator, 3505 Butti Way, Carson City, NV 89701.
