Food for Thought receives 172 pounds of food from expo

As a result of canned food donations at the Home and Life Expo last week, Carson City's Food for Thought received 172 pounds of food to help feed children of the community.

The Home and Life Expo, along with the Taste of Home Cooking Show, was sponsored by the Nevada Appeal and The Record-Courier.

"It was our largest donation so far this month - by far," said Food for Thought's Peter Starren.

"As of April, we were serving the children of 12 schools, including the six Carson City School District elementary schools, two Head Start programs, one Early Child Education Center, Hugh Gallagher Elementary in Virginia City and Dayton Elementary," he said.

"We hope to expand our program throughout the remainder of the school year as we have a number of schools on our waiting list. There are many children in our community whom we are not yet able to serve, but who are in need of our program," Starren said."

the early years of baseball in Nevada

Bob Nylen, Curator of History at the Nevada State Museum, will discuss "Frontier Baseball in Nevada" for the Sierra Place lecture at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Baseball first arrived in Nevada around 1868, in an era before players used gloves and pitchers threw the ball underhand, with very different rules of the game than played today.

The public is invited to the free lecture at Sierra Place senior living center, located at 1111 West College Pkwy.

Lyon sheriff's office to increase enforcement

The Lyon County Sheriff's Office will conduct traffic safety and pedestrian enforcement operations in Dayton, Fernley, Stagecoach, Silver Springs and Mason Valley starting Monday through May 9.

On Wednesday, deputies in Dayton will be on the look-out for vehicles that fail to yield to pedestrians as well as pedestrians that fail to follow proper laws for crossing streets.

Another enforcement effort in Fernley happens on May 7.

Meanwhile, all locations will see increased traffic enforcement, especially for speeding.

Travel club to talk about future trips

The Silver Sierra Travel Club will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Carson City Nugget.

Information and fliers on upcoming trips will be available. There will also be a presentation on attractions in and around Placerville, Calif.

Gift shop to offer Easter clearance sale

The Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare Auxiliary Gift Shop will hold an Easter Clearance Sale Monday through Saturday next week.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

There are many gifts for Easter, including toys and items to fill Easter baskets.

All merchandise will be 30 percent off with the exception of See's Candy, flowers and greeting cards.
