The United States Postal Service is conducting a public meeting at 6 p.m. today to discuss the possible closure of the downtown Yerington Post Office.

The meeting will take place in Central Branch Library, 20 Nevin Way, in Yerington.

David Rupert, a USPS spokesman for the Nevada District, said that if the downtown office is closed, those 460 boxes would be moved to the southern Yerington office.

The distance from one post office to the other is less than a mile.

"We are trying to save the cost of keeping that office open," Rupert said, adding that nothing is pre-determined going into the meeting. "We are trying to be smart about our money."

Rupert said residents would be able to keep their same address and zip code if a closure would take place.

The USPS plans to save as much as $500 million in the next two years as it works to close or consolidate about 2,000 offices. Another 500 sites are slated to close by June. The moves come after the Postal Service reported a $8.5 billion deficit in 2010.

Rupert said 22 meetings across the state are scheduled.
