Owings pitches a gem in Aces' 9-2 win

FRESNO, Calif. - Aces starter Micah Owings retired 16-straight batters to close out his outing, and the bullpen was nearly untouchable after that as Reno clipped the Fresno Grizzlies, 9-2, in the series opener Saturday.

Owings (3-0) stayed perfect on the season and improved to 21-3 in his Minor League career.

The big league veteran allowed two first inning runs before settling in and shutting out the Grizzlies over the next five frames. Owings scattered four hits with four strikeouts and no walks.

The Aces and Grizzlies will lock horns again on this afternoon. RHP Kevin Mulvey (1-1, 13.17 ERA) toes the slab for Reno, while Fresno will counter with LHP Matt Yourkin (0-2, 6.19 ERA). First pitch is set for 2:05 p.m.


Edwards holds off Kyle Busch to win Nashville 300

GLADEVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Carl Edwards was coming in for his postrace news conference when a race official remarked that he now has enough guitars to start a band.

Edwards certainly hit all the right notes Saturday to capture his fifth career victory at Nashville Superspeedway, holding off Kyle Busch to win the Nashville 300 and receive another of the guitars given to winners at the track.

"We'll need a drummer," Edwards joked.

Edwards led 148 of the 225 laps and passed Busch on lap 191 to take the lead for good.


Brandon Marshall stabbed by wife

MIAMI (AP) - The wife of Brandon Marshall stabbed him with a kitchen knife, sheriff's deputies said Saturday, and his publicist said the Miami Dolphins receiver was released from a hospital and would fully recover.

Michi Nogami-Marshall, 26, was arrested Friday evening and charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

According to a Broward County Sheriff's Office arrest report, Nogami-Marshall told officers she was defending herself.
