Harvesting
Check vines of cucumbers, squash and zucchini often to harvest fruits before they get too large. Younger fruits are more tender, and removing them will keep vines producing longer.
New plant care
Make sure that trees, shrubs and perennials planted in the past 18 months are adequately watered before they show signs of wilting. Soak their root zones using a watering can, five-gallon bucket or wand attachment to a hose. Don't rely on lawn sprinklers to deliver enough water.
Soak the plants once a week in the absence of adequate rainfall. A light mulch will conserve soil moisture.
Container watering
Patio containers and pots must drain freely but will need daily watering in sunny and breezy locations. Leave 1 to 2 inches between the soil line and the lip of the container to hold water. Soak the soil until you can see water running through the drain holes. Before you go away for a few days, move the pot into a sheltered, shady location and then water thoroughly.
