LAS VEGAS - Carson High's varsity volleyball team dropped three games to open the season Friday at the Las Vegas tournament.

Fatigue may have been an issue for the Senators, who left Carson in the wee hours of the morning. The team left before 4 a.m. and played long into the night.

Carson opened with a 25-20, 22-25, 13-15 loss to Boulder City. Coach Robert Maw said that team got off the bus and went straight into the game.

In the second match, the Senators were matched up against the 4A runners-up from last year, Green Valley. Green Valley won 25-6 and 25-16. To cap the day, Carson lost 19-25, 25-19 and 14-16 to Shadow Ridge.

"We came together as a team," Maw said. "It was nice to see us fight through. We were four points from being 2-1."

Leading Carson was Alyson Chrystl with 17 digs; Micaela Von Winkle and McKenzie Price with six kills; Angela Augusta with four digs and seven kills; and Kristalei Wolfe with 11 digs and nine kills.

Carson plays today at 11 a.m. and noon before entering single elimination play. Maw said he expects Carson to make a nice run today - after a good night's sleep.

Dust Devils open 1-2

YERINGTON -Coach Monica Halverson was ecstatic about the Dust Devils play during the first day of the Yerington volleyball tournament on Friday.

Despite a 1-2 record, the Dust Devils played three strong matches. Dayton defeated Incline in the opening match before losing to South Tahoe. In the third match, they took the defending state champion Yerington Lions to the brink. Yerington won 24-26, 25-23 and 16-14.

"It was amazing," Halverson said. "The girls stepped up and played like a team. I am so excited about this year."

Stats weren't available but Halverson credited the play of Erin Edison, Madison Foley, Cora Jeffreys, newcomer Alyse Fletcher and Tarynn Schriner.

Dayton returns to the tournament at 8 a.m. this morning against South Tahoe.

Halverson was hoping for another chance at the defending state champions before league season started.

"They are going to be awesome games," Halverson said of the matchup against Yerington.
