130 YEARS AGO

Horace Greeley as a Prophet. In an article entitled the "Crystal Palace and its Lessons," Greeley says in 1853: "Perhaps a railroad across the Rocky Mountains, a telegraph across the Atlantic, a towering observatory wherein all the calms and storms at any point prevailing within the earth's atmosphere shall be portrayed on a common dial plate." In one paragraph Greeley states the unattempted, which have been completed. (The last reference refers to the signal corps).

100 YEARS AGO

J. B. Fleming, one of the best known metallurgical engineers in Nevada, met a shocking death at the Hotel Golden in Reno Sunday. Being ill for a few days, he had gone through an open window stepping onto the roof of the court. In some manner he found his way to the skylight, where he fell through onto the flagged floor of the hotel.

70 YEARS AGO

Col. E. F. Carr of the U.S. Army in Sacramento has sent the following to peace officers: "It is urgently requested that state, county and other governmental agencies and users of explosives exercise all precautions to prevent the procurement of explosives by subversive elements."

50 YEARS AGO

Mrs. C.A. Carlson was honored today at a surprise party at Carson Junior High School noting her retirement after many years of service to the school system. A gift was presented by Jack Blaikie on behalf of the 50 teachers at the party.

20 YEARS AGO

The Boys and Girls Club of Carson may get a home Thursday if Supervisors agree to let organizers refurbish the Police Athletic League Gym. "This is our first major step," said Bill Maddox, former U.S. Attorney.

Former casino employees picket Stateline telling people casinos are union busters and unfair to labor.
