A fire off of Deer Run Road that quickly grew to up to 400 acres is no longer threatening homes in the area, said Fire Chief Stacey Giomi.
"The fact that the wind is blowing east not only helped us, but saved homes," he said.
The Laurel fire started in the area of Dear Run and Laurel roads at 1 p.m. Friday, initially threatening about 20 homes.
A voluntary evacuation was called, but residents were allowed to return about an hour later when winds shifted the fire east toward Brunswick Canyon.
Gusts in the area are up to 50-60 mph, Giomi reported.
A high wind advisory is in effect in Carson City until 7 p.m.
No roads have been closed in Carson City nor has Highway 50 East.
Several agencies have responded to the fire.
