Travis Unruh, owner of Green Lizard Landscaping, will give a free seminar on Bonsai 101 on Feb. 19.

Unruh will cover how to bonsai a plant and how to shape and maintain a plant once it has been bonsaid. He also will talk about the art of bonsai, types of plants that adapt well to this procedure, and equipment and supplies needed for bonsai.

This class is free but reservations are required. It will be offered from 1-2 p.m. at Greenhouse Garden Center, 2450 S. Curry St.

Dan and Rachel McClure, owners of Nevada's Own Perennials, will present a seminar on shitake (Blue Oyster) mushrooms at Greenhouse Garden Center from 102 p.m. Feb. 26.

They will talk about how to grow these mushrooms from a kit and give cooking demonstrations for preparing the mushrooms as well as recipes. Reservations are required for this class and the cost is $35, which includes a mushroom kit.

Connecting farmers and consumers to the food we eat is the goal of the 2011 Nevada Small Farm Conference, Friday-Saturday March 11-12 at the WNC Fallon campus and the Fallon Convention Center.

The conference, "Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food," provides an opportunity for farmers and consumers to connect to learn about improving the economic and physical health of Nevada farms and communities.
