MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) - Venus Williams has recovered from an injury to beat Sandra Zahlavova 6-7 (6), 6-0, 6-4 and advance to the third round at the Australian Open.
Williams was choking back tears and needed to leave the court for a medical timeout at the end of the tiebreaker after twisting sharply for a swinging backhand volley on the final point. The appeared to hurt her stomach or groin.
Williams returned with her right thigh heavily strapped, and dominated the second set.
It took the attention, for a while, off her revealing lattice-style top with multicolored satin short skirt that barely concealed her self-described flesh-coloured "nude shorts."
Williams' sister, Serena, is missing the tournament with an injury.
