Moonlight party: The ladies in charge of the Circulating Library are giving a moonlight party at Treadway's Park. Excellent music, first-class prompter on hand to call the dances. The terpsichorean exercises will begin at 9 p.m., ice cream and lemonade will be on sale during the evening.

120 YEARS AGO

A horse's sagacity: As the morning express was nearing Empire, a large cottonwood tree was blown across the track, and but for the sagacity of Commissioner Morris' horse, a terrible disaster would have occurred on the V & T. It appears the horse saw the tree across the track and the train rounding the curve. He was tied to a post, but breaking away he rushed up to a grocery store and dipping his tail in a barrel of red roof paint, rushed back and elevating the red danger signal in air flagged the train. The passengers realized what had occurred and there was a general desire to show some appreciation for the animal's heroic act and a contribution was taken up to furnish the beast extra fodder for the Summer.

Solar spectacle: The Fleischman Planetarium at the University of Nevada, Reno, is gearing up for the solar eclipse, the state's first since 1986.

Bruce Bommarito is Nevada's new tourism director taking over the job from Tom Tait. "It's always been my business to find the good in an area and I love Nevada," said Bommarito.

• Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
