AB170 seeks warnings of dangers of smoking

(AP) - Cigarette vendors in Nevada would have to post signs warning about the dangers of smoking while pregnant if an Assembly bill passes.

Supporters of AB170 say the Surgeon General's warnings on cigarette packs are not enough to warn women that smoking can cause birth defects, low birth weight and premature birth.

Health care for a premature baby averages almost $50,000 in the first year of life, compared with about $4,500 for a healthy baby. That's according to the March of Dimes.

Some members of the Assembly Health and Human Services Committee on Wednesday raised concerns that requiring more signage would overburden retailers or clutter small stores.

Committee members will work on the bill more before taking a vote.
