RENO (AP) - NV Energy is proposing a reduction in natural gas rates that would save its customers about $5 off a typical $60 monthly bill starting in the fall.

Nevada's largest utility filed the request with state regulators on Tuesday to reduce gas rates by 8.2 percent and electric rates by about one-half of 1 percent effective Oct. 1.

It's part of NV Energy's annual energy cost adjustment and is subject to approval by the Nevada Public Utilities Commission.

Company officials say the average customer using 740 kilowatt hours of electricity would enjoy about a 30-cent savings on a typical $88 monthly bill. The average gas ratepayer using

56 therms of gas would pay a monthly bill of $54.83, down $4.59 from the current rate.
