The Nevada Appeal's "Silver Dollar" and "Wooden Nickel" feature recognizes positive achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out others that missed the mark.
SILVER DOLLAR: To Carson City's Sue Kitts Jesch, and the Nevada State Museum for being recipients of the 31st Annual Governor's Arts Awards. Jesch was honored for her work with Strings in the Schools, and the Nevada State Museum was honored for its leadership in the arts.
In these times of budget cuts it is nice to see individuals and organizations keeping the arts alive and well in the Silver State.
WOODEN NICKEL: To the person or persons behind the poaching of at least eight deer in the Voltaire Canyon area in South Carson City.
Hopefully someone saw something and can help the wardens bring closure to this heinous crime.
A $2,500 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible.

SILVER DOLLAR: So the silver lining in all of that shoveling and ice chipping in February is that the Sierra snowpack is at 124 percent of normal for this time of year.
The recent storms made up for a very dry January and will help meet water needs this summer.
The extra precipitation that rolled through the region a few days ago also will help. And a glimpse at the forecast suggests more moisture is on its way.
