Rural courts seek relief from records archiving

(AP) - Rural Courts Coordinator John McCormick presented an amendment to AB195 to the Assembly Judiciary Committee to free justice and municipal courts from the bill's archiving requirements.

The courts coordinator Thursday said the bill as written would require the lower courts to archive records of misdemeanors like traffic violations, a requirement that is financially prohibitive and logistically impossible.

AB195 requires that courts make microfilm or electronic copies of court records before shredding paper ones. The bill received the support of Julie Butler, the records manager of the Nevada Department of Safety.

Butler says electronic records would be an asset for employers and firearm sellers looking to verify applicants' eligibility.

Carson City Clerk-Reporter Alan Glover supported the measure, but cautioned courts to use multiple formats to protect against phased-out technology.
