The Douglas softball team came up on the wrong end of a pitcher's duel Thursday afternoon, falling 2-1 to Reno in Minden.

The loss dropped the Tigers to 0-1 in Northern 4A play and 2-2-2 overall on the young season.

Douglas carried a 1-0 lead into the top of the seventh and junior pitcher Kalee Duryee had faced the minimum 18 batters up to that point, striking out eight, walking one and allowing just one hit, which was later picked off at first base.

Reno, though, started the seventh off with an infield single and pushed the runner to second on a stolen base.

A bunt single put runners on first and third and a one-out fielder's choice to second scored the tying run.

A groundout to second brought what would prove to be the game-winning run in for the Huskies.

Douglas went down in order in the bottom half.

"It's one we should have won, it just got away from us at the end," Douglas coach Andy Mitchell said. "We normally do a lot of situations like we saw in the seventh inning during practice to try to simulate those things. But with the weather, we just haven't had much of a chance to work on those things.

"If that happens again during the year, we'll know better how to handle them."

Douglas initially took the lead went Naomi Roberts, who finished the day 2-for-3, doubled off the center field fence to score catcher Kelly Sonnemann in the bottom of the fourth.

Brenna White had Douglas' only other hit of the afternoon - a double.

"Kalee threw really well today, we were very happy with her," Mitchell said. "She did a great job, it's just unfortunate we couldn't back her up on offense. We can't expect to win with just one run. We have to bounce back and pick it up against Damonte Ranch this weekend."
