Whipping at the Home: A severe beating was received by Fred Gray, an inmate of the Orphans' Home. An Appeal reporter called upon Mr. Mills, the superintendent who gave the following version: "The boy was punished, he was guilty of gross disobedience. The teacher, Miss Harris, requested him to step up to her desk. The request had been made several times. The boy picked up a fire poker and struck Miss Harris in the face."

Tall bonnets: The Nevada papers are complaining about the annoyance caused in theaters by the "tall bonnets" worn by the ladies.

120 YEARS AGO

Feud ended: The feud between the Hatfields and the McCoys of Kentucky is at end. Aaron Hatfield, a nephew of "Devil Anse," the long head of the gang, shall marry the fair daughter of the house of McCoy. Over two hundred people have been killed since the trouble began.

70 YEARS AGO

Donkeys carry radio sets: The long-eared beasts of burden that accompany bands of sheep into the hills have a new responsibility.

They pack radio sets, operated by dry batteries for sheep herders. The small radio set brings news, music and entertainment.

50 YEARS AGO

Births: Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Sheridan of Carson City are parents of a girl born at Carson-Tahoe hospital.

20 YEARS AGO

Southwest Airlines has been awarded a $5 million contract to transport state employees between Las Vegas and Reno. The contract will save taxpayers between $78,000 to $104,000 for two years.
