Nevada trapping under scrutiny

(AP) - Trapping in Clark and Washoe Counties is under scrutiny but ran into tough opposition before a Senate committee.

SB226 would eliminate the use of leg-hold, body-crushing and snare traps in counties with populations of 100,000 or more people in areas within 1,000 yards of an occupied dwelling.

Animal advocates say the measure it intended to protect children and pets and highlighted stories of dogs and cats becoming entangled in the devices. They also say they are not against trapping per-se, just specific types of traps.

Opponents say pet claims are overstated and there are no reports of humans getting entangled. They also say it would prevent farmers and homeowners from protecting livestock and property.

No action was taken by the Senate Committee on Natural Resources.
