KIRKWOOD, Calif. (AP) - Bud Klein, founder of Kirkwood Mountain Resort in the Sierra Nevada, has died after a battle with cancer.

Resort spokesman Michael Dalzell said Monday that Klein died May 5 at his home in Stockton, Calif. He was 83.

Klein founded the privately-held resort south of Lake Tahoe in the 1970s.

Dalzell says Klein, who split his time between Kirkwood and Stockton, loved the view of Kirkwood Meadow. The meadow will be renamed in a conservation trust bearing his name.

Kirkwood wasn't his only love.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports Klein was a major backer of California Cooler, a blended beverage of wine and fruit juice that took off in the 1980s.

The family also owns wineries and farms in California's Central Valley.
