Republicans gain on Democrats in October voter registration

The Nevada Republican Party made a nominal gain in voter registration during October, registering 1,819 new voters - almost twice as many as the state Democrats' 926.

The Nevada Democratic Party still has 100,000 more total registered and some 65,000 more active voters - those who responded to the postcard asking them to verify their current address. Inactive voters still are allowed to vote on Election Day if they verify to election workers that they are at their registered address.

Altogether, there are 1.33 million voters in Nevada, 1.13 million of whom are considered active.

Among active voters, there are now 475,218 Democrats and 410,950 Republicans. Total registration for Democrats was 566,155, compared to 465,445 Republicans.

The next-largest bloc of Nevada voters are nonpartisans, who numbered 181,960 actives and 220,214 total voters as of the end of October and, according to political analysts, decide most hotly contested races.

The Independent American Party has the next-highest total number of registered voters with 51,535 active and 62,168 total voters.

Much smaller numbers are reported by the secretary of state's office for Libertarian, Green Party and "Other" parties.
