Palmer wins club title at Dayton

Andrew Palmer shot a 153 over 36 holes to win the Palmer Club Championship at Dayton Valley Golf Club.

Palmer, an employee at Dayton Valley, had rounds of 74 and 79 to grab a two-shot victory over Jeff Miller who had rounds of 76 and 79. Cory Peterson was third with a 159 (76-83) and John Cowee was fourth with a 164 (83 and 81).

Palmer won $250 for his efforts with Miller taking home $200, Peterson $150 and Cowee $100.

Randy Anderson won the net division with a 148 which was worth $200. Don Robertson was a stroke behind at 149 which earned him $150. Don Harn and Dennis Hillyard tied for third at 152, while Jim Crawford was fifth at 153 and Brent Kidd was sixth at 155.


Four win low net

at Empire Ranch

Nick Paul, Fred Blackburn, Robey Willis and Ed Cabello were flight winners at the Empire Ranch Senior Men's Club weekly stroke play tournament.

Paul won the A flight with a 63, the same score as runner-up Henry Teague. Blackburn won the B flight with a 60, four shots ahead of Mike Vadnais and Steve Scharfe. Willis won the C flight with a 61, four shots ahead of Richard Ziegler and Nils Sharpe. Cabello's 62 was a stroke better than Jim Watt and three better than Hans Ehrlin and Vic Roscha.


Stableford event

at Silver Oak

Vern Rosse, Lew Dodgion, Rion Causey and James Barnett combined for a 94 points to win the first round of the 4-man Silver Oak Stableford tourney on Sept. 27.

Don Fox, Martin Johnson, Danny Jones and John Scoville were tied for second with Tony Barbaria, Terry Thomas and Jim Zewan plus a blind draw partner. Both teams finished with an 86.

Robey Willis, Dick Green, Bob Lewis and Lee Gilmore (twice) were closest-to-the-hole winners.


Coons, Menezes

team up for win

Russ Coons and Marc Menezes combined for a 63 to win the A flight in the 2-man Chapman event at Carson Valley Golf Club on Oct. 2.

Roger Hala and Charles Poe were second with a 64, while Ken Smitreski and Jim Korzeniewski were third with a 67.

In the B flight, Gerald Bing and John Carey were first with a 62, while Paul Finan and Augie Martinez were second with a 65. Joe Morrison and Gerry Paulson were third with a 66.

women win match

Thunder Canyon defeated Hidden Valley 62-46 in a Ladies Challenge match-up held recently.


Carson Midgets

improve to 4-0

The Carson City Midget Pop Warner team allowed just four first down and intercepted two passes en route to a 32-0 win over Fallon last Saturday.

Victor Castro Jr. and Josiah Pongasi had the interceptions for Carson, which improved to 4-0.

Elijah Fajayan scored on three touchdown runs to lead the offense, while Pongasi and Asa Carter had one score apiece.

Carson returns to action Oct. 14 at 6 p.m. against Douglas.


Carson Middle

improves to 12-0

The Carson Middle School eighth-grade girls basketball team improved to 12-0 with a 31-10 win over Pau Wa Lu.

Serena Miller led Carson with 12 points, while Lindy Lehman and and Lorena Gomez added six points each.


Baseball tryout set

at Western Nevada

The Pecos League, an independent professional baseball league with teams in Colorado and New Mexico, will be holding a one-day tryout Nov. 5 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Western Nevada College.

Players 18 and over are invited to attend. All players will receive a written evaluation. The cost to try out is $50.
