The Carson Library consistently demonstrates and showcases the many talented people who live in the area or call Nevada home. Artists, teachers, world travelers and local teenagers fill the calendar for October and provide ongoing events and learning experiences for people of all ages and diverse interests.
Capital City Arts Initiative presents Mick Sheldon
When Nevada native and UNR graduate Mick Sheldon gave his college students and himself an assignment to create a still life, he used objects common to his home state for inspiration. His exhibition, "Still Lifes for Cowpokes," and his CCAI "Nevada Neighbors" presentation, "Gone Thirty Years but Still a Nevadan," demonstrate a deep love for and an understanding of Nevada history and culture. The Arts Initiative will host a reception for Sheldon at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 26 in the library auditorium, and his presentation will follow at 7 p.m. Sheldon obtained a bachelor's degree in fine arts from UNR and a master's degree in painting from UC Davis, and he lives in Northern California.
CC Historical Society: Dr. Maria Taylor, Jane Austen Scholar
Dr. Maria Taylor is a recent resident of Northern Nevada, has lived and studied in California and England, and is noted for her knowledge of all things Jane Austen. Taylor has been the archivist at Jane Austen's House in Chawton, Hampshire, England, and, since discovering Austen during a summer reading assignment in high school, has devoted most of her studies and lectures to the author. Austen's novels include "Sense and Sensibility" and "Pride and Prejudice," and are classic reading requirements for high school and college students. Taylor's presentation premieres at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, October 27 in the library auditorium. The doors open at 6:00.
Ongoing programs and information
Explore the World @ Your Library: Russia. Russia has a rich, diverse, and often turbulent culture and has been a vital player in the global dynamic for many years. At 6 p.m. Thursday in the library auditorium, Explore the World @ Your Library will present Slava Kolupaev, who will provide a fascinating program about this unique country.
VARN (Volunteer Attorneys for Rural Nevadans) and NV Legal Services have three timely workshops and clinics scheduled for this month. From 12 to 1 p.m. Oct. 27, VARN presents a clinic focusing on information regarding divorce. From1 to 3 p.m., NV Legal Services will conduct a workshop on filing legal forms; and from 3:30 to 5 it will spotlight Juvenile Law/Parental Responsibility. All three of these presentations are free and require no registration.
Teen Meeting and Teen Book Club
The library functions on a higher level because of the enthusiasm, hard work and dedication of volunteers and because of programs such as the Teen Advisory Board and Book Club. Both groups offer teenagers an opportunity to enjoy activities after school and be an integral part of many library innovations. The advisory board and the book club meet from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday.
The library will be closed Oct. 28 in observance of Nevada Day.
