Our View: Shooting questions may defy answers answer

With the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11 just days away, it's easy to see how some people drew parallels to the shooting in Carson City that claimed at least two National Guard soldiers among the victims Tuesday morning.

We know that within minutes of the news hitting the Web, people who had no way of knowing how or why this incident happened were already speculating, jumping onto bandwagons and beginning crusades in the names of the dead and injured.

That speculation said nothing about the horrible thing that happened and everything about the people who felt the need to share their opinions at a time when words of comfort, not rhetoric, is required.

We believe that information about the shooter and his motivation will come clear as time passes.

In the meantime, we all need to take a deep breath and be patient. There is no present threat to the public, the scene in Carson City is reasonably quiet and the time to assess the damage has arrived.

That process will take time and effort, and when it comes together, we will all learn about it together.

Once we have that information there may be some opportunity to help prevent other incidents. But we also have to accept that the information may also lead us to the conclusion that there wasn't much anyone could do.
