COMMUNITY SPORTS: Silsby wins Silver Oak club title

Jim Silsby shot a 5-over-par 147 to win the Silver Oak Senior Men's Club gross championship and Alex Talmant shot a 129 to win the net championship.

Silsby won $100 for his effort, while Talmant received $75.

Silsby and Wayne Feletar tied for second in low net for Flight 1 with 139s, while John Dark was fourth at 140. Dale Guy rounded out the top five with a 141 net score. Steve Alcalay won low net for Flight 2 with a 137, one stroke ahead of Vern Rosse. Luther Best and Pat Lantis tied for third at 140. William Matthews was fifth with a 143.


Plymells win mixed

match-play crown

Randy and Barbara Plymell went 5-1 to win the Thunder Canyon Country Club Mixed Match Play Championships recently. They finished with 34 points.

Dave and Brooke Nielsen took second with 33 points, while Mike Bennert and Shelly Brewster-Meredith were third with 31 points.

Bennert, Mike Judge, Mark Janes and Charlie Cockerill won TC's One in the Bucket with a 136. Second went to Tom Brennan, Terry Gilmartin and Chuck Griffin with a 140, while Jeff Gussow, Vern Hamilton, Larry Goodnight and Steve Rydel were third with a 143.

Jeanne Brennan shot a 64 to win the Women's Club stroke play event. Claudia Goodnight and Becky Martinelli tied for second with 65s and Lynn Greenman was fourth with a 66.


West, Johnson win single titles

Steve West and Ryan Johnson won singles titles at the Carson Tennis Club's recently concluded Fall Classic.

Johnson won the men's A singles title over Mike Espinosa, while West topped Cody Tindel in men's B singles.

In Mixed A doubles, Bob McCann and Lora Barretta beat Jeff Estep and Eleanor Lockwood. In mixed B doubles. Richard Lee and Bernie Fournier defeated Grant Thompson and Natasha Long.

In women's B doubles, Eleanor Lockwood and DeAnn Fipps won over Gayle Stewart and Sandra Bernard. In men's A doubles, Ray Fugitt and Ross Rittiman knocked off Jeff Estep and Mike Fipps. In mn's B doubles. Roger McCaskill and Frank Blankenship) defeated West and Steve Crouch.


Lake Tahoe Classic

set for Oct. 17

The Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe Golf Tournament is set for Oct. 17 at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course.

The cost is $195, which includes a gourmet breakfast, six Titleist Pro VI golf balls, a box lunch, beverages on the course and an awards banquet with appetizers.

There are raffles and auction items and $10,000 cash for a hole-in-one.

CHS hosts golf tournament

The Carson High girls basketball, wrestling and golf teams are holding

a golf tournament Oct. 2 at Eagle Valley-East.

The cost for the four-man scramble event is $75, which includes green fees, cart and lunch. A portion of each player's fee will go to one of the three sports or you can ask that all three sports share the proceeds. There are awards for first through third place, long drive and closest to the hole.

Entries are due by Sept. 29.

4-man scramble at Empire

The team of William Mulligan, Geoffrey Swann, Walt Blizzard and Clark Reid shot a 48 to win the Empire Ranch Senior Men's scramble tournament on Sept. 21.

Bill Gibson, Henry Teague, Martin Johnson and Nils Sharpe were second with a 48, while Carl Slate, Tom Sawyer, Marshall McCurdy and Phil Polaske were third, also with a 48. John Masiello, Tony Grinceri, Steven McMorris and Bob Hendry also had a 48 and finished fourth.

Terry Thomas, Paul Seaman, Bill Barker and Joe Scott won closest-to-the-hole honors.


Tiny Mites down South Tahoe 24-6

Vinnie Ferretti and Dawson main scored touchdowns to lead the Carson Tiny Mites past South Lake Tahoe.


Midgets win third straight contest over weekend

The Carson City Pop Warner Midgets stayed unbeaten with a 22-6 win over the Sparks Wolfpack.

Brady O'Keefe had TD runs off 55 and 12 yards, and Asa Carter had a 65-yard run. Salvador Rodriguez, Kevin Rusler, Jared Akers, Carlos Pacheco, Jesse Knorzer, Tristian Wadsworth and CJ Woons.

Defensively, Austin Lowe, Michael Gould, Moose Bradley, Hunter Wheeler, Thomas Gall, Victor Castro Jr., Greg Wallace and Josiah Pongasi played well. Pongasi had an interception.

A botched long snap led to Sparks' only score.


Carson Middle girls win two more games

Carson Middle School's eighth-grade girls basketball team knocked off Carson Valley 22-18 and Alder Creek 34-12 in recent action.

Serena Miller scored seven against Carson Valley and 15 against Alder Creek, while Bailey Allen scored six against Carson Valley with Ali Kibbe tallying six against Alder Creek.

In other games, Carson topped Yerington 24-21 behind 12 points by Miller and Eagle Valley 38-19 thanks to 13 by Miller. In a 41-27 win over Winnemucca, Miller scored 22 and in a 30-16 win Bailey had eight and Miller 13.


CMS 7th graders are 8-3

Carson Middle School's seventh-grade girls basketball team improved to 8-3 overall and 5-0 in league.

Carson Middle has defeated Alder Creek 14-4, Yerington 20-10, Eagle Valley 23-13 and Lovelock 36-16.


Menezes wins top flight at Carson Valley

Marc Menezes shot a net 68 to win th Carson Valley men's Club stroke play event on Sept. 25 in Gardnerville.

John Dorman and Roger Hala tied for second with 69s, while Russ Coons was fourth with a 71. Chuck Householder won Flight B with a 64, while Gil Causton and Neil Bain tied for second with 68s. John Carey was fourth with a 70.
