Program begins planting 10,000 trees in Carson

Friends of the Urban Forest has been busy this month planting trees and promoting its 10,000-tree initiative.

April is the official kickoff date of the program, and the group has been busy registering the trees they have planted, as well as those planted by residents.

"The tree inventory is an important aspect of the program, and it is essential that homeowners and businesses help us count their newly planted trees," said Kyle Horvath, co-chairman of the effort.

"Just email the type of tree, location and size, and you're done."

The Autumn Blaze Maple was named Carson City's "Very Important Tree for 2012," Horvath said.

"This means that its qualities make it a very suitable tree for our environment," he said.

Friend of the Urban Forest co-founder Gianna Shirk described the tree this way: "This shade tree has beautiful fall color with drought tolerance as well as strength in wind."

She noted that Autumn Blaze Maples can be found at the group's sponsoring nurseries, Genoa Trees, Greenhouse Garden Center and Home Depot.

Carson City resident Tom Mix, for the second year, coordinated an effort to donate 16 trees, which Carson City Parks Department planted along the Longview Ranch Linear Park in the Highlands neighborhood off King Street.

"The parks staff is so cooperative. What a great way to give back," Mix said. "More people should get involved."

The Friends group also donated seven trees to Western Nevada College this year, which continues to beautify its campus through treescaping.

Future projects are planned for the Silver Saddle Ranch, Carson River and Northern Nevada's display and exhibition orchard on the grounds of the Greenhouse Project at Carson High School.
